How Often Do Hair Extensions Need Maintenance?

"How often will I have to come in?" is the question that decides whether someone books extensions, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassuring one.

Extensions are a standing commitment. Here is the actual schedule by method, what happens at the appointment, and what going late does.

The Short Answer

MethodMaintenance intervalWhat happensStarting price
Hand-tied (beaded weft)Every 6-8 weeksRows taken down, hair washed and checked, same wefts reinstalled higher$350
Tape-inEvery 6-8 weeksWefts removed with solvent, fresh tape, same hair reinstalled higher$200
Keratin bond (K-tip)Every 3-4 monthsBonds dissolved and combed out, fresh strands installedQuoted at consultation

Separately, the hair itself has a lifespan: hand-tied wefts are reused for nine to twelve months, tape-in hair lasts four to six months, and keratin tips are consumed at every removal.

Why the Schedule Exists At All

Your hair grows about half an inch a month. Whatever your extensions are attached to grows with it.

An attachment sitting snug against your scalp on installation day is a full inch lower two months later. Nothing has gone wrong. The hair has simply moved, and the attachment needs resetting.

That reset is called a move-up. You will also hear maintenance appointment, re-tape for tape-ins, and reinstall for keratin bonds. Same principle, different execution.

What Actually Happens in the Chair

Take-down. Thread cut and beads opened, or tape released with solvent. Your extensions come out intact. Nothing is pulled.

Wash and detangle. Your natural hair gets washed properly at the bowl without a row in the way, then carefully detangled. A surprising amount of shed hair comes out here. That is normal and it is not damage — it is hair you would have lost day by day anyway, held in place by the row instead of falling out.

The check. The part genuinely worth paying for. Your extensionist looks at the condition of your natural hair at every attachment point, checks for thinning, tension or breakage, and tells you what they see. If something needs to change — fewer wefts, different placement, a break from extensions altogether — you hear it here.

Reinstall. New beads and thread, or fresh tape. The same hair goes back in, close to the scalp again.

Cut, blend and style. Your extensions and your own hair have both grown. The blend is reworked so the ends still read as one head of hair.

What Going Late Actually Does

This is worth being specific about, because "extensions ruined my hair" is nearly always this.

When an attachment sits too far from the scalp, three things compound:

  1. The angle of pull changes. Tension stops distributing evenly across the row and starts concentrating.
  2. Shed hair accumulates. Hair that would have fallen out is trapped behind the attachment. Over weeks it knits into a mat at the base.
  3. The lever gets longer. The same weight now hangs off more of your own hair, which means more leverage on the root.

Together, that causes breakage. On schedule, none of it happens.

This is why we book your next appointment before you leave the current one, rather than leaving you to remember. If you are already past due, call us instead of waiting for a convenient slot — a late move-up is worth rearranging your week for.

Choosing a Method Around Your Calendar

If the frequency is your real constraint rather than the cost, say so at your consultation. It changes the recommendation.

Keratin bonds run three to four months between appointments instead of six to eight weeks. Over a year that is three or four visits instead of seven or eight. For someone with a demanding schedule, or driving in from Dallas, that difference matters more than a few hundred dollars on the install.

Stretching the Time Between Appointments Safely

You cannot extend the schedule, but you can make the weeks in between much easier on your hair:

  • Brush morning and night with a loop brush or wet brush, ends first, supporting the attachment with your other hand
  • Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner throughout
  • Nothing oily at the attachment points — conditioner, oils and serums on mid-lengths and ends only
  • Dry the attachment area properly instead of sleeping on it damp
  • Braid loosely before bed and use a silk or satin pillowcase
  • Braid before swimming and rinse immediately afterwards
