Tape-ins are the fastest and most affordable way into extensions, and for a lot of first-timers they are the right place to start. Thin wefts backed with medical-grade adhesive sandwich a fine section of your natural hair, sitting flat and moving naturally. A full head goes in during a single 60 to 90 minute appointment.

How Tape-Ins Work
A tape-in weft is a thin strip of hair with a strip of medical-grade adhesive along the top edge. Your extensionist takes a very fine section of your natural hair, places one weft underneath it and one on top, and presses them together so the tape sandwiches your hair between them.
The result is a flat, thin panel that lies close to the head and moves naturally. There is no heat, no thread, no beads, and no tension pulling on individual strands.
Why People Choose Tape-Ins
- Speed. A full head in 60 to 90 minutes, versus 2 to 3 hours for hand-tied.
- Cost. From $800 including the hair, against $1,500 for a hand-tied install. It is roughly half the entry cost.
- Low commitment. If you are not sure extensions are for you, this is the cheapest honest way to find out.
- Genuinely thin. Tape wefts are among the flattest attachments available, which matters if your hair is fine on top.
- Easy to add to. Wefts can be added at a later appointment if you decide you want more.
Who Tape-Ins Suit
Tape-ins are a good fit if you are new to extensions and want a lower-cost trial, if you want volume more than dramatic length, if your natural hair is straight to gently wavy, and if you are comfortable with an appointment every 6 to 8 weeks.
They are a weaker fit if you wear very high ponytails, if you have an oily scalp or use a lot of oil-based product, or if you want maximum length. In those cases we will point you toward hand-tied rows instead, even though it is the more expensive service. A method that fails in six weeks is not a saving.
What to Expect at the Appointment
Arrive with clean, dry hair, freshly washed and fully dried, with no conditioner, oil or styling product in it. The adhesive needs a clean surface to grip.
Your extensionist sections your hair, places the wefts row by row from the nape upward, then cuts and blends them into your natural hair. You will leave styled, and you will get a home-care walkthrough before you go.
Living With Tape-Ins
The care rules for tape-ins are stricter than for other methods, because everything hinges on the adhesive:
- Wait 48 hours before your first wash. The bond needs to cure.
- Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, always.
- Nothing oily near the tape line. No oils, no heavy serums, no silicone-rich conditioners at the root. Mid-lengths and ends only.
- Go easy on dry shampoo at the roots. Buildup on the tape is a slippage problem.
- Dry the tape line properly after washing. Do not sleep on damp tabs.
- Brush with a loop brush, ends first, supporting the panel with your other hand.
- Braid loosely at night and sleep on silk or satin.
- Rinse immediately after a pool or the lake.
Re-Taping and Maintenance
Every 6 to 8 weeks the wefts are removed with a proper adhesive solvent, your natural hair is washed and checked, fresh tape is applied, and the same hair goes back in higher up. Re-tapes start at $200.

Do not pull tape-ins out yourself. Removal without solvent is where almost all tape-in damage stories come from.
