Keratin bond extensions go in one strand at a time. A small keratin tip is heat-sealed around a fine section of your natural hair, creating an attachment that moves completely independently. You will also see them called K-tips or fusion extensions. They are the method we reach for when a row physically cannot go where the hair needs to be.

How Keratin Bonds Work
Each extension strand comes pre-tipped with a small, solid piece of keratin — the same protein your hair is made of. Your extensionist takes a fine section of your natural hair, positions the tip against it, and uses a heated tool to soften the keratin so it wraps and sets around that section.
Once it cools, the bond is solid. It is small, roughly the size of a grain of rice, and it moves with your hair rather than anchoring it to anything.
The heat goes into the keratin, not into your hair. That distinction matters and it is the reason the method is safe when it is done properly.
What Keratin Bonds Do That Rows Cannot
This is the real case for K-tips, and it is a placement argument rather than a general one.
A hand-tied row is a horizontal line. It needs enough hair above it to hide under, which means it cannot go near your hairline, it cannot sit along your part, and it cannot easily wrap around the face. Those are exactly the places where thin hair shows most.
Individual bonds have no such limit. They can be placed one at a time, exactly where density is missing:
- Along the hairline, where fine or receding edges show
- Down the part, where scalp shows through
- Around the face, for face-framing length and body
- Over a specific thin patch, rather than across a whole section
Natural Movement
Because every strand is attached independently, keratin bonds produce the most natural movement of any extension method. There is no panel and no row, so the hair swings, separates and falls exactly like your own does.
If you wear your hair down most of the time and you are fussy about how it moves, this is the method that reads most convincingly.
Who Keratin Bonds Suit
K-tips are a strong fit if your hair is fine to medium in texture, if you want density at the hairline or part rather than overall length, if you want the longest possible stretch between appointments at 3 to 4 months, and if natural movement matters more to you than cost per month.
They are a weaker fit if your natural hair is very oily, since oil at the root can loosen a bond over time, or if you want a large volume change quickly, where rows simply carry more hair for the chair time.
Combination Installs: Our Most Common Recommendation
For a lot of our clients the answer is both. Hand-tied wefts build the bulk of the length and volume through the back and sides, and a set of keratin bonds finishes the hairline, the part and the face-framing pieces where a row cannot reach.

Living With K-Tips
- Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.
- Keep conditioner and oil off the bonds. Mid-lengths and ends only, always.
- Dry the root area after washing. Bonds should not sit wet.
- Brush with a loop brush, ends first, and separate the bonds with your fingers when you get out of the shower so they do not knit together.
- Braid loosely at night. Matting between bonds is the most common complaint and it happens overnight.
- Heat styling is fine, but keep the iron off the bond itself.
Separating the bonds daily is the one habit that makes or breaks a K-tip set. It takes under a minute and it prevents the tangling that otherwise builds where bonds sit next to each other.
Removal and Reinstall
At the 3 to 4 month mark the bonds are broken down with a proper keratin solvent and combed out, and fresh strands are installed. Nothing is pulled.
Because the keratin tip is consumed, K-tips use new hair at each reinstall rather than reusing it the way hand-tied wefts are reused through a move-up. That is the main cost difference over a year, and we will lay it out for you before you commit.
