Balayage Near Carrollton, TX: Cost, Upkeep, and What to Expect

Carrollton is about ten miles from our salon in West Plano, which is close enough that plenty of our color clients drive it, and far enough that they think about how many trips a year a service is going to cost them. That second part is the reason balayage comes up as often as it does. It is the one color service on the menu designed around a long grow-out, which makes it a good fit for someone who is not coming from four blocks away.

This guide covers what balayage near Carrollton actually costs, how many visits a year it realistically takes, what it takes to do on dark hair, and how to keep the tone from turning on you between appointments in hard North Texas water.

Why Balayage Suits a Drive from Carrollton

Balayage is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair instead of packed into foils from the scalp down. That one technical difference is what changes the calendar. There is no sharp line of regrowth forming at the root four weeks later, because the lightener was never applied at the root in the first place. The color is brightest through the mid-lengths and ends, and your natural base at the top is part of the design rather than a problem to be covered.

In practice, that means:

  • A full balayage holds its shape for three to four months, sometimes longer on hair that is already close to its natural level
  • A gloss or toner in between keeps the tone fresh without another lightening service
  • Roughly five to seven appointments a year, against eight or nine for foils maintained on a six-to-eight-week cycle

If you want the long version of that math, we wrote it out with real prices in our balayage vs highlights cost breakdown, and our guide to how long balayage lasts covers what stretches or shortens the window for your hair specifically.

What Balayage Costs Near Carrollton

These are our published prices. The range is our five-level stylist system, where Level 1 is the newest stylist on the floor and Level 5 is the most experienced and in-demand.

ServicePrice by stylist level
Full Balayage (90g lightener, root smudge, gloss and tone)$250 – $290
Partial Balayage (45g lightener)$210 – $250
Gloss / Toner on its own$65 – $85
Full Highlights, for comparison$220 – $260
Partial Highlights$190 – $230
Illumination (face-framing brightness with gloss)$100 – $120

Two things worth knowing about that table. First, the toning is already in the price. A balayage here includes the root smudge, the gloss and the tone rather than adding them as separate lines at checkout, which is where quotes from different salons stop being comparable. Second, very long or very dense hair needs more lightener than 90 grams, and that moves the number. We quote it at the consultation, in person, looking at your actual hair. The full menu lives on our pricing page, and the highlights pricing breakdown explains what pushes a color quote up or down.

Balayage on Dark Hair: What It Really Takes

A large share of the balayage we do starts from a medium to dark brunette base, and this is where expectations and chemistry most often disagree.

Lightener removes pigment in a fixed order. Dark hair passes through red, then orange, then gold before it ever reaches a clean blonde. Getting a very dark base to a bright, cool blonde in one sitting means pushing past where the hair can safely go. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that lightening hair more than three shades requires higher volumes of peroxide, which causes more hair damage, which is exactly why a reputable colorist will stage it.

What that looks like on a real head of hair:

  • Soft caramel, honey or bronze dimension on a brunette base — usually one appointment
  • A noticeable lift of three or more levels — commonly two appointments spaced several weeks apart, with a bond or conditioning treatment in between
  • Previously box-dyed dark hair heading toward blonde — a plan rather than an appointment, and closer to a color correction than a standard balayage

We use Schwarzkopf BlondMe with bond-protecting technology and assess elasticity before any lightener is mixed. If the honest answer is that your hair cannot take what the photo requires today, you will hear it at the consultation rather than in the mirror three hours later.

What the Appointment Looks Like

Plan on two and a half to three hours for a full balayage, closer to two for a partial. The sequence is consistent: consultation and color history first, sectioning and freehand painting second, processing under watch rather than on a timer, then a shampoo, the root smudge and gloss, and a cut or trim and style to finish.

Bring photos, including ones you do not like. Knowing what you want to avoid tells a colorist as much as knowing what you want. Our walkthrough of what to expect at your first balayage appointment covers the whole visit in detail, and if you are still deciding who to sit with, how to choose a balayage colorist lays out the questions worth asking.

Keeping the Tone Right in Hard North Texas Water

The grow-out of a balayage is forgiving. The tone is not, and this is the part that catches people out between appointments.

Toner and gloss are demi-permanent by design. They sit on the hair rather than inside it, and they are the first part of any color service to fade. Layer on the water: most of North Texas runs moderately hard to hard, so every wash leaves behind a little calcium and magnesium that dulls shine and pulls warmth forward in both blondes and brunettes. Our guide to hard water and hair covers the clarify-and-chelate rhythm that keeps ahead of it, and why blonde hair turns brassy explains the chemistry behind the color shift.

What works, in order of how much difference it makes:

  1. Book a gloss between balayage appointments. At $65 to $85 it resets the tone for a fraction of a full service, and it is the single most effective thing on this list. See root melt and toning for what a toning visit covers.
  2. Clarify or chelate before your color appointment, not after. Mineral buildup makes fresh color grab unevenly.
  3. Wash less, and cooler. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets deposited tone rinse away faster.
  4. Use purple toning sparingly. Once or twice a week is a ceiling, not a target — daily use turns blonde dull and faintly gray.
  5. Protect from heat and sun. Both fade painted ends first, because that is where the hair is lightest and most porous. Our color-treated hair care guide has the full routine.

Getting Here from Carrollton

We are at 6101 Chapel Hill Blvd, Suite 103, Plano, TX 75093, about ten miles from most of Carrollton. Clients coming from Josey Ranch and the historic downtown square generally run east on the President George Bush Turnpike and exit toward Preston Road; from Trinity Mills and the Hebron Parkway side, Josey Lane north to the Turnpike is usually the faster trip. Outside of rush hour it is a fifteen to twenty minute drive.

Parking is free, in a surface lot directly in front of the building, which is a small thing until you are sitting for a three-hour appointment. You can see everything we offer Carrollton clients on our Carrollton service area page, and if extensions are also on your list, Carrollton searches for beaded weft and hand-tied extensions more specifically than almost anywhere else we serve.

Our full technique breakdown lives on the balayage service page, and you can read about the colorists who would be doing the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does balayage cost near Carrollton, TX? At Lee Graves Salon in West Plano, about ten miles from Carrollton, full balayage runs $250 to $290 and partial balayage $210 to $250, depending on your stylist's level from 1 to 5. Those prices already include the root smudge, gloss and toning, which some salons quote separately. Very long or very dense hair takes extra lightener and can move the quote above the starting rate, so you get an exact number at the consultation rather than over the phone.

How far is the salon from Carrollton? About ten miles, or roughly fifteen to twenty minutes outside of rush hour. Most Carrollton clients come straight up Josey Lane or take the President George Bush Turnpike east and exit toward Preston Road. We are at 6101 Chapel Hill Blvd, Suite 103 in Plano, with free surface parking directly in front of the building, which matters when a full balayage keeps you in the chair for three hours.

How often will I have to come back? Balayage is the lowest-trip color service on the menu. Because the lightener is painted rather than packed in foils at the scalp, there is no hard regrowth line to chase, so most clients book a full balayage every three to four months with a gloss or toner in between. That works out to roughly five to seven visits a year, against eight or nine for foil highlights on a six-to-eight-week cycle.

Does balayage work on dark brown or black hair? Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. The honest part is the timeline. Dark hair lifts through red and orange on its way to anything lighter, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that lightening hair more than three shades requires higher volumes of peroxide, which causes more hair damage. So a very dark base heading toward a bright caramel or blonde is usually a two or three session plan spread over months, not one appointment. Soft caramel or honey dimension on a brunette base is often achievable in a single visit.

Why does my balayage go brassy a few weeks after I leave? Two things are usually at work. Toner is demi-permanent and the first part of any color service to fade, and most of North Texas runs moderately hard, so every wash deposits a little calcium and magnesium that dulls shine and drags warmth into blondes and brunettes. A gloss at $65 to $85 resets the tone, and a chelating or clarifying wash before your color appointment gives your colorist a cleaner canvas to work on.

Is balayage or foil highlights the better call if I am driving in? If your goal is soft, lived-in dimension and the fewest appointments, balayage. If you want uniform brightness all the way to the root, especially on fine hair, foils still do that better than painting can. Full balayage starts at $250 against $220 for full highlights, so balayage costs more per visit and less per year, because you are in the chair a third as often. Many clients end up with both: foils through the top for brightness, painted pieces underneath for softness.
