Shadow Root

A shadow root adds a soft, slightly deeper shade at the root that mimics natural regrowth. Instead of bright color starting right at the scalp, your root sits a touch darker and blends into the lighter lengths. The effect is twofold: it looks intentional and dimensional, and — crucially — it means your actual regrowth blends in as it grows rather than creating a stark line.

Root Melt

A root melt takes the shadow-root idea further. Rather than just deepening the root, your colorist "melts" the root color smoothly down into the mid-lengths, erasing any hard transition entirely. The result is a seamless gradient from root to end — no line, just a gradual shift. It's the backbone of lived-in color and one of the reasons balayage grows out so gracefully.

Toning and Gloss

A toner deposits the exact opposite tones to neutralize that warmth and set your final shade, whether that's icy, beige, golden, or somewhere in between. A gloss does similar work while adding serious shine.

Here's the important part: toner fades faster than the lightening underneath it. Your highlights are still there months later, but the cool, polished tone drifts warm as the toner washes out.
