Before You Book
The FAQs above cover most of what people ask us. A few things are worth spelling out at more length, because they are the points that most often decide whether extensions work out for someone.
The Three Ways Extensions Actually Cause Damage
It is worth being blunt about this, because "do extensions ruin your hair" is the most-searched extension question there is and the honest answer has conditions attached.
Too much weight for your density. Your hair can only carry so much. This is decided at the consultation, and it is the reason we assess density before discussing what you want. A stylist who agrees to any amount of hair you ask for is not doing you a favour.
Move-ups left too long. As your hair grows, the attachment point travels away from the scalp, the angle of pull changes, and shed hair collects and knots at the base. That combination causes breakage. On schedule, it does not happen. This is covered in full on our maintenance and move-ups page.
Home removal. Tape-ins need solvent. Keratin bonds need solvent. Beaded rows need the thread cut and the beads opened. Pulling any of them out at home takes your own hair with them. If you want them out, come in — removal is quick and it is not worth the risk.
Get those three right and extensions are one of the safer things you can do to your hair, because unlike color they involve no chemical process on your own strands at all.
Which Method Is Right For You
There is no universally best method, only the right one for your hair and your life:
- Hand-tied (beaded weft) — fine hair, real length, wearing your hair up. From $1,500.
- Tape-in — speed, lower entry cost, trying extensions for the first time. From $800.
- Keratin bond (K-tip) — hairlines, parts, face-framing, the most natural movement, and the longest gap between appointments.
- A combination — rows for the bulk, bonds for the detail. This is what a lot of consultations land on.
