How to Choose a Hair Extension Salon in Dallas

Extensions are the highest-ticket service most salons offer and the one where the choice of salon matters most, because a bad install is not just a disappointing look — it can cost you your own hair.

DFW has no shortage of extension salons. Here is how to tell them apart.

The Five Questions

1. Does the price include the hair?

This single question explains most of the price variation you will find across the metroplex. Hair is the biggest line item in an install. A salon quoting labor only can advertise a much lower headline figure and land in the same place, or higher, once hair is added.

Ask for the all-in number. For reference, our starting rates of $1,500 for a full hand-tied install and $800 for a full tape-in install both include the hair.

2. How will you assess my density?

Density — how much hair you have — is what determines how much weight your scalp can safely carry. It is not the same as how fine your hair is, and it is the measurement that should drive the entire recommendation.

If nobody mentions density, nobody has assessed the one thing that decides whether the install is safe.

3. What is the maintenance schedule and what does it cost?

Get the ongoing number, not just the install number.

Hand-tied and tape-in both need attention every six to eight weeks. Keratin bonds run three to four months. Over a year that is a substantial second cost, and a salon that has not volunteered it has shown you well under half the picture.

4. How does removal work, and what does it cost?

You will take them out eventually — to change method, take a break, or stop altogether. Find out now.

Tape-ins need solvent. Keratin bonds need solvent. Beaded rows need the thread cut and beads opened. None of it should ever be done at home, and a salon should tell you that plainly.

5. What happens if the color match is wrong?

A poor match cannot be styled around. The only remedy is redoing it. Ask what the policy is before the hair is ordered, not after.

The Red Flags

Same-day installation. Custom color-matched hair is ordered after your consultation, which means a one-to-two-week gap. Same-day means being fitted to stock already in the drawer.

No consultation, or a token one. A real consultation runs about thirty minutes and produces a color match, a method recommendation and a written quote. A five-minute chat ending in a deposit request is a sales step, not an assessment.

Yes to everything. If you ask for waist-length volume on fine, sparse hair and the answer is an unqualified yes, nothing has been assessed. The right answer sometimes involves a limit, and a stylist willing to tell you no is protecting your hairline.

Only one method on offer. Hand-tied, tape-in and keratin bond suit different hair and different lives. A salon that installs only one will recommend it to you regardless of whether it fits.

Pressure at the consultation. A free consultation should carry no obligation. If you are being pushed to put a deposit down before you have had time to think about a four-figure commitment, that tells you something.

Good Signs

• A substantive free consultation with density assessment, swatch matching in salon light, and a written quote
• Multiple methods genuinely offered, with a reasoned recommendation between them
• A named extensionist who does extensions regularly, rather than "one of our stylists"
• Honest talk about maintenance before you book, not after
• A portfolio of real clients rather than manufacturer stock photography — ours is in the extension results gallery
• Willingness to say no, or to recommend a treatment first if your hair is not ready

On "Extension Specialist"

The term is unregulated, so it is worth probing. Ask who is doing your install, how long they have been doing extensions specifically rather than hair generally, and which methods they work with week to week.

Extension installation is a separate skill from cutting or coloring. The precision of the work at the attachment point is exactly what protects your natural hair over the following year.

Location Is Part of the Decision

This is more practical than it sounds. You are not booking one appointment, you are booking roughly eight over the next year for hand-tied or tape-in.

A salon twenty minutes closer is a salon whose move-up schedule you will actually keep, and keeping the schedule is the single biggest factor in whether extensions stay healthy. Weigh that alongside everything above.
