If you searched "hair botox near me" and landed here, the short answer is that we don't offer anything by that name, and once you know what the name means you probably won't want us to. It isn't a brand of treatment we've decided to skip. It's a marketing term for something already sitting on our menu at a fraction of what a lot of salons charge for the branded version.

Here's what "hair botox" actually is, how it differs from a keratin treatment, and how to tell which one your hair is asking for.

There Is No Botox in Hair Botox

Start with the obvious part. Botulinum toxin therapy is a medical treatment a dermatologist performs during a single office visit to diminish facial lines or treat excessive sweating, with results that last about three to four months. It has nothing to do with hair, and none of it goes anywhere near your head at a salon.

The hair version borrowed the name because the promise sounded similar: something smoother, plumper, and younger-looking. What's in the bottle is a deep-conditioning treatment, usually built around proteins, oils, and conditioning agents that coat the hair shaft and fill in the rough, porous spots along a damaged cuticle. Hair comes out softer, shinier, and less frizzy because the surface is temporarily smoother.

The important thing to understand is that "hair botox" isn't a regulated term or a standard formula. It describes a marketing category, not a chemistry. Two salons advertising it may be using entirely different products, which is why the price and the result vary so widely.

What a Keratin Treatment Actually Does

A keratin treatment is a different kind of service. It's a chemical smoothing treatment, and the FDA describes the basic process plainly: a solution is applied to the hair followed by a heat treatment that seals the solution in.

That heat-sealing step is the whole point. It's what changes how your hair behaves instead of just how it feels. A full keratin treatment loosens curl, cuts blow-dry time substantially, and holds up against Texas humidity for three to five months before it gradually washes out. A conditioning treatment can't do that. It sits on the hair rather than reorganizing it, so the frizz comes back the next time the weather does.

The Question Behind the Question

Almost everyone booking either service is trying to solve frizz. But frizz has two different causes, and they need opposite answers.

If your hair is damaged, the frizz is coming from a roughed-up cuticle: lightening, daily hot tools, hard water, a summer of chlorine and sun. The strand itself is compromised, and it looks fuzzy because the surface no longer lies flat. Conditioning and bond repair are the right call. Smoothing chemistry on top of already-fragile hair is how people end up worse off than they started.

If your hair is healthy but textured, the frizz is just your curl pattern meeting North Texas humidity. No amount of conditioning changes that, because there's nothing to repair. That's a smoothing problem, and it's what keratin services exist for.

About "Formaldehyde-Free" Claims

A lot of hair botox marketing leads with being formaldehyde-free, positioned as the safe alternative to keratin. It's worth being precise here, because this is the one place the comparison genuinely matters.

A pure conditioning treatment involves no smoothing chemistry at all, so there's no formaldehyde question attached to it. That's a legitimate advantage if the topic concerns you.

But the label itself deserves scrutiny. OSHA's guidance on salon products is blunt: "Even smoothing products that do not list formaldehyde on the label, or that claim to be 'formaldehyde free' or 'no formaldehyde,' can still expose workers to formaldehyde." If a treatment is being heat-sealed with a flat iron, it is behaving like a smoothing product regardless of what the bottle says.

The FDA's advice is the practical version: check the packaging for formaldehyde, formalin, or methylene glycol, and ask the salon whether an ingredient list and a Safety Data Sheet are available. Any salon worth booking will hand both over without hesitation.

Making Either Result Last

Whichever you book, the home routine does most of the work between appointments:

• Wash less, and wash cooler. Every wash pulls a little of a conditioning treatment off and shortens a keratin result. Hot water opens the cuticle and speeds both up.
• Go sulfate-free. Sulfates strip a keratin treatment faster than anything else you'll do to it, and they undo a conditioning treatment just as quickly.
• Use a bond or protein treatment on a schedule, not just when hair feels bad. Most clients do well with something at every color appointment, roughly every six to eight weeks.
• Add a masque weekly if your hair is lightened, heat-styled daily, or currently breaking.
