Going Out Hairstyles That Last All Night

By Lee Graves Salon·

The best going out hairstyle is the one still standing at 11 p.m. Plenty of styles look great in the mirror at seven. Far fewer survive a patio in August, a crowded bar, a jacket collar, a crossbody strap, and a few hours on a dance floor.

Below are the looks we actually steer clients toward, grouped by whether your hair is up, half-up, or down, with notes on who each one suits and what makes it hold. Every photo in this guide is our team's work.

Start With the Night, Not the Photo

Most going-out hair disappointment comes from choosing a look online and then asking it to survive a night it was never built for. Before you pick a style, answer four questions:

  • Where will you be? An air-conditioned restaurant and a Legacy West patio in July are two different climates.
  • Will you be moving? Dancing, concerts, and standing-room crowds pull styles apart. Anchored styles like buns, braids, and ponytails outlast loose curls.
  • What's the neckline? High necks and busy collars look cleaner with hair up. Strapless and off-the-shoulder tops show off waves. A low back is made for an updo.
  • How does your hair behave in humidity? If it frizzes or drops its curl by lunch on a humid day, pick a style that doesn't depend on curl to look finished.

Hair Up: When It's Hot, Crowded, or Late

Sleek Low Bun

This is the going out hairstyle we recommend most, because it's nearly impossible to ruin. Smooth the hair back to the nape, secure it, twist or loop it into a bun, and pin it. The polished finish reads dressy with a black dress and relaxed with a denim jacket, and it looks the same at midnight as it did at dinner.

It works on shoulder-length hair and longer, and it's the most humidity-proof style in this guide because it doesn't rely on curl or volume. Its only real enemy is flyaways, and a little pomade smoothed over the surface keeps it glassy. Want it dressier without much more effort? Work a small braid along one side before you twist the bun, like the version on the right.

Textured Updo

The loose, pinned updo at the top of this page is the softer cousin. Curl the hair first, gather it loosely, pin it in sections, and pull a few pieces free around the face and nape. Because it's meant to look undone, it forgives movement over the course of a night. A curl that slips just looks intentional.

It does need grip. Very clean, silky hair lets pins slide right out, which is why stylists spray texture into the hair before building an updo. Day-old hair does the same job for free.

Sleek High Ponytail

This is our pick for a night of dancing. Brush it smooth, secure it at the crown, wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to hide it, and finish the length straight or with a loose bend.

One caution: snug, not tight. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that hairstyles that pull, including sleek ponytails and tightly pulled updos, can lead to hair loss when worn repeatedly, and its rule of thumb is simple: if your hairstyle feels painful, it's too tight. One night out won't hurt you, but a ponytail that aches by nine o'clock is worth loosening.

Half-Up: The Safest Bet for Most Nights

If you can't decide, go half-up. You get the softness of hair around your face and shoulders, with the top section secured so it can't fall into your eyes or frizz at the crown. It suits nearly every length from the collarbone down, and it's the most forgiving style if your plans change halfway through the night.

Half-Up Twist

Take a section from each temple, twist both back toward the crown, and pin them where they meet or tie them into a small knot. Add curls through the lengths for a dressier version, like the one on the left, or leave second-day hair as it is for a quick after-work look.

Braided Half-Up

Braid two small sections from the temples, draw them back, and pin them together at the crown, as on the right. Braids are anchored, so this is the half-up to choose when you'll be dancing or outside. Gently pulling the braids apart after you pin them makes them look fuller and more relaxed.

Hair Down: Waves That Survive the Evening

Down is the hardest option to keep looking fresh, especially from May through September. When it works, though, nothing looks better. The trick is to build the wave to last from the start rather than hoping it does.

Glam Waves

Big, brushed-out curls with volume at the root, like the look on the left. Curl larger sections away from the face, let every curl cool completely before you touch it, then brush through gently with your fingers or a wide brush. This is the style for dinner reservations, indoor parties, and anything with a photographer.

Soft, Lived-In Waves

The more relaxed version has flatter, looser waves that leave the ends a little straighter, as on the right. Because these waves start looser, they have less to lose, which makes them a better bet than tight curls on a humid night. They also look better on second-day hair than on freshly washed hair.

Not enough length or fullness for the look you want? Clip-in extensions add both for a single night, and you can ask about them as an add-on when you book styling. If you find yourself wanting that length every weekend, our hair extensions page covers the longer-term options.

Short Hair and Bobs

Short hair has more going-out options than people give it credit for, and it often holds a style longer because there's less weight pulling it down.

  • A small half-up knot at the crown, like the one on the left, works on hair that just reaches the shoulders. It's also a good way to keep a growing-out fringe off your face.
  • Defined curls with the top pinned up, as on the right, give a shoulder-length cut volume and shape for the evening.
  • Sleek and tucked. A deep side part, a smoothing cream, and hair tucked behind one ear turn a bob into a finished look in minutes.
  • A bend, not a curl. A loose bend from a flat iron keeps a bob looking modern, where tight curls can shrink it.

How to Make Any Going Out Style Last

Humidity is the reason so many styles collapse halfway through the night. Heat styling works because heat breaks the hydrogen bonds that hold the proteins in your hair in place, which lets the hair take a new shape. The trouble is that water breaks those same bonds. As Scientific American explains, when humidity is high, or the cuticle is damaged, more water enters the hair, and too much of it swells the cuticle into frizz. That's the chemistry behind a curl that was perfect at seven and flat by ten.

You can't change the weather, but you can stack the odds:

  1. Start with day-old hair. Freshly washed hair is slippery and won't hold pins or curls well. If you've just washed it, a texture spray adds the grip back.
  2. Protect before you heat. Use a heat protectant before the blow-dryer and again before the curling iron, and use the lowest setting that still holds the curl. A damaged cuticle lets in more water, so heat damage makes the humidity problem worse. Our heat styling and protection guide covers temperatures and prep.
  3. Let curls cool before you touch them. A curl sets as it cools, so brushing it out while it's still warm is the fastest way to lose it.
  4. Cross your bobby pins. Two pins crossed in an X hold far better than one pushed straight in.
  5. Seal it. Finish with a firm-hold hairspray held at arm's length, and smooth an anti-humectant product over the surface of sleek styles to keep frizz out.
  6. Pack a small kit. A few bobby pins, a clear elastic, and a travel-size spray fit in a clutch and fix almost anything.

When It's Worth Having It Done

Some nights deserve more than your own two hands and a curling iron: a milestone birthday, a gala, a wedding you're attending as a guest, or any night you'll be photographed. A professionally set style also tends to last longer, because it's built with the prep and product that make it hold.

Taking It Down

What you do at 1 a.m. matters, too. Take out every pin and elastic before bed rather than sleeping in them. Loosen hairspray with your fingers first, then brush from the ends up so you aren't tearing through knots from the top.

The waves from a going out style often make the best second-day hair. A loose braid or a silk scrunchie overnight, plus a silk or satin pillowcase, keeps them intact until morning. If you'd rather get waves with no heat at all, try one of these heatless curl methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hairstyle for going out?

It depends on the night. A half-up style is the safest all-rounder because it looks soft but stays out of your face. Choose an updo or sleek low bun for heat, crowds, and dancing, and save loose waves for dinner and air-conditioned venues.

How do I make my hairstyle last all night?

Start with day-old hair or add a texture spray, use a heat protectant, let curls cool completely before touching them, cross your bobby pins, and finish with a firm-hold hairspray. Styles that don't depend on curl, like buns and braids, last longest.

What hairstyle holds up best in humidity?

Sleek low buns, braided styles, and textured updos. Humidity lets water back into the hair and relaxes heat-set curl, so styles that look finished without curl hold up best. An anti-humectant product smoothed over the surface helps keep frizz out.

Should I wash my hair right before going out?

Usually not. Hair washed the day before holds pins and curls better than freshly washed hair, which is slippery. If you need to wash it, add a texture spray before styling to give it grip.

How much does it cost to have your hair styled for a night out?

At Lee Graves Salon in Plano, a blowout is $50 to $70, special occasion styling is $90 to $110, and updos start at $120, depending on stylist level and hair length. The full menu is on our pricing page.
